SANFORD SURVIVES A WILD NIGHT AT I-44 TO EMERGE VICTORIOUS
by Jordan Kuehne(LEBANON, Missouri) – Blake Sanford couldn’t stop laughing victory lane until he started coughing from the remnants of the Speedy-Dry on Lebanon I-44 Speedway’s racing surface. It was that kind of a night at Missouri’s only asphalt oval as red flag periods stopped both the O’Reilly Auto Parts ASA Late Models main event that Sanford survived as well as the visiting Pro National Baby Grand Series headliner won by Brad Stiffler.
Blake Sanford surged to the early lead in the 25-lap O’Reilly Auto Parts ASA Late Models main event on Central Bank Night at the Races.
As Sanford slipped away to a comfortable edge, Joe Ross and young Austin Fullerton battled for the bridesmaid’s position. Fullerton’s spinning machine brought out the caution with 14 laps remaining as Sanford’s sizable gap evaporated and the field bunched back up.
When racing resumed, Sanford escaped again and quickly built up a solid lead over Ross before another yellow halted proceedings after Grant Sharp went around in turn three. After several cautions for single car spins and a lengthy red flag for a blown engine, Sanford soared to the lead on the final restart and clinched a wire-to-wire triumph for his second win of the season in just his fifth career time piloting a late model.
“This was a marathon,” said Sanford in the winner’s circle. “I tried to stay focused out there and keep my head on the task at hand.”
